In 1878, cattle dealer James Beardsley donated more than 100 acres to the city
of Bridgeport. Three years later, landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted was
commissioned to create Beardsley Park. Given P.T. Barnum’s love for animals, the
park now encompasses a wildlife refuge with an 80-year history as Connecticut’s
only zoo, holding over 300 animals that primarily represent North and South
American species.
