Serving a student population of 4,090, the Monroe school district employs 273 full-time classroom teachers, equaling a 15 to 1 student/teacher ratio. Ninety percent of Masuk High School graduates in 2003 attended institutes of higher learning, including several of the most competitive colleges and universities nationwide.

Monroe students are encouraged to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. In addition, great emphasis is put on interpersonal communication, a life skill essential in today’s culture.

Housatonic Community College
900 Lafayette Boulevard, Bridgeport: Founded in 1967, Housatonic Community College serves Southwestern Connecticut and is a member of the Connecticut Community-Technical College system. The college moved into its state-of-the-art campus in downtown Bridgeport in 1997.

Sacred Heart University
5151 Park Avenue, Fairfield: Sacred Heart University was founded in 1963 by the Reverend Walter W. Curtis and was the first Catholic university in the United States to be led and staffed by lay people. Esteemed for the individual attention it provides students, Sacred Heart University is best known for its commitment to academic excellence and community service.

University of Bridgeport
126 Park Avenue, Bridgeport: The University of Bridgeport is an international, doctoral university with outstanding academic programs. Students can earn degrees in many undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university employs 200 full and part-time faculty members.

Western Connecticut State University
181 White Street, Danbury: Part of the Connecticut State University school system, WestConn prides itself on having a strong liberal arts foundation where skills in problem solving, critical thinking and communication are emphasized. Bridgeport Hospital
267 Grant Street, Bridgeport: Bridgeport Hospital is a private, not-for-profit hospital with 425 licensed beds, 2,000 employees, 500 active attending physicians representing 70 subspecialties. There are 180 medical/surgical residents and fellows in programs affiliated with Yale University School of Medicine.

Griffin Hospital
130 Division Street, Derby: Griffin Hospital is a 160 bed facility serving Planetree, a not-for-profit international organization that works with other hospitals and healthcare centers to provide patient-centered care in healing environments. In 1995, Griffin won the Design Award from The Center for Health Design, recognizing their architectural conception, one promoting well-being and healing.

Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service
The town volunteer EMS serves Monroe residents by providing timely pre-hospital care to the sick.

Park City Primary Health Center
64 Black Rock Avenue, Bridgeport: Part of the Bridgeport Community Health Center, this organization offers medical care for infants, children, teens and adults. Additionally, the center provides screenings, physicals, sick visits, counseling, immunizations and on-site communicable disease testing.

Saint Vincent’s Medical Center
2800 Main Street, Bridgeport: Saint Vincent's is a major, 397 bed acute care hospital with an active medical staff of 450 physicians. The hospital has been recognized as one of the top 100 heart hospitals in the United States, representing an ample range of more than 50 specialty and subspecialty medical and surgical disciplines.


Recreation

Great Hollow Lake
454 Purdy Hill Road: Located within Wolfe Park, this 16 acre man-made lake is comprised of a 700 foot beach that accommodates swimming, fishing and non-motorized boating. The lake is the only trout park located in Fairfield County that has been designated by the State of Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection.

Lake Zoar Boat Ramp
Roosevelt Drive: Located just upstream of the Stevenson Dam, the ramp is accessible to all Monroe residents. Open year-round, nature enthusiasts are given ample opportunity for fishing and boating. A day at the lake is a great way to spend your weekend!

Monroe Library
7 Fan Hill Road: Offering over 75,000 books to the public, the library serves as Monroe’s primary access to information. A knowledgeable and well-trained staff is available to assist those desiring to take advantage of the great services, materials, equipment and programs the library provides.

Paugussett Trail
East Village Road: One of Connecticut’s “Blue Blaze” trails, The Paugussett is an 8.7 mile byway featuring some of Monroe’s greatest features: the Indian Well Falls, statuesque views of the Housatonic Valley, Stevenson Dam, and Lake Zoar. The trail extends from Indian Well State Park to East Village, Monroe.

Stevenson Dam
Route 34: Located on the Housatonic River, the Stevenson Dam was built in 1919 and includes a boat ramp and private swimming area. The Dam was originally constructed by the Connecticut Light and Power Company to produce hydroelectric power; it is now a popular spot for fishing enthusiasts.

Webb Mountain Park
Webb Circle: A delightful setting for hikers, Webb Mountain Park is comprised of 136 woodland acres teeming with interlacing trails. Located in the northeastern corner on Monroe, its hilly topography poses a challenge to visitors. Also included are nine marked camping sites.

Whitney Farms Golf Course
175 Shelton Road: This 18-hole golf course was originally purchased by the Whitneys as a farm with rare horse breeding stables. The facility opened as a golf course in 1982 and holds sightly ponds and views. Slope levels range from 124 to 130; yardage extends from 5832 to 6628.

William E. Wolfe Park
285 Cutlers Farm Road: Encompassing 379 acres of land, Wolfe Park holds two lighted basketball courts, four soccer fields, seven ball fields, eight tennis courts and an outdoor 25 meter swimming pool. Other amenities include three playgrounds, two bathhouses, hiking trails, picnic areas, a 16 acre lake for swimming and fishing, non-motorized boating, concessions, vending, parking for over 500 vehicles and much more!

Transportation

  • Amtrak Railroad transportation provides 14 trains daily to Bridgeport, the only service stopping between New Haven and Stamford.

  • Connecticut Routes 25, 34 and 111

  • Metro-North Commuter Railway provides 63 trains daily to Bridgeport, and is a 75-80 minute train ride to New York City.

  • The Greater Bridgeport Transit Authority operates a family of bus transit services in the Greater Bridgeport Connecticut Area with services provided throughout Bridgeport, Fairfield, Stratford and Trumbull. Route 111 services extend to Monroe. Additional services include extensive minibus assistance for riders with disabilities.
